Goodbye to Turkey
NEW PHOTO’s ! Our last days in Turkey were wonderful, the highlight being Akdamar Island in Lake Van.
According to the legend, once upon a long a go, there was a beautiful young girl living on the Island, named Tamara. Unfortunately she was guarded by a monk of the church on the island. A young lad, living on the shore of Lake Van, used to swim to the island on a light-signal of the young lady, to meet her secretely. At one night a severe storm hit Lake Van, and high waves crushed on the island’s shore. The young lad saw a distant light in the storm, and despite the waves he tried to swim to the island. Swimming through the waves he almost reached the island but the light kept moving and moving. The Monk preven In the end the young lad gave up, shouting ” Ah Tamara!” and drowned in Lake Van. When the young lady found out about the Monk’s scheme, she was devastated and drowned herself in Lake Van as well. According to this Turkish Romeo and Juliet story, that’s how Akdamar island (AhTamara) got his name.
The Armenian church on the island is still in good shape, even the fresco’s are still largely intact. Almost more impressive are the blossom trees on the island, the blue Lake Van and the mountains covered with snow in the background. Like a postcard.
The surroundings of the Lake Van are equally beautiful. Also nice was Van castle, which we saw from a distance (we were too lazy to climb all the way to the top).
Another interesting thing about Van are the Van cats. These are white cats and many of them have two differently colored eyes (blue and yellow). This genetic aberration has made the Van cats legendary and the myth goes that these cats can swim over Lake Van. We visited the Van cats zoo and indeed found out that many of them have one blue and one yellow eye.
Waving the cats goodbye we drove back to Dogubayazit planning the cross the Iranian border the next day.
