Tashkent

Walk through the streets of Tashkent and you will experience an interesting mix of Russian, Asian and European culture. The city is the largest of Central Asia and because of its broad avenues is spread out over a large area. It doesn’t seem to have a real city center at least, we couldn’t find it. We liked the many trees and all the parks, it’s really a green city.

Although most of the architecture seems to be Russian, we also visited the old part of town, which has a more Asian kind of feel, with narrow streets and some nice muslim monuments. The newer parts of Tashkent are well kept and clean with relatively (for Central Asia) good facilities. We were suprised to see so many European companies here in Tashkent. Also, when it comes to restaurants, hotels and bars, Tashkent is developed more than any other city in the region. You can get almost everything, although prices are much higher than in the rest of Uzbekistan. Many designer stores sell Adidas, Mexx and Dolce & Gabbana, and we saw plenty of BMW’s, Lexus and Mercedes cars in between the tiny Daewoo’s and antique Lada’s.

The population in Tashkent is a real melting pot of Russians, Uzbeks, Koreans and expats. You don’t see that many traditionally dressed Uzbeks here, the Russian influcence is much stronger. People are still friendly, but are a bit more reserved than in the countryside.

For us, Tashkent is a comfortable place to rest, relax, wine & dine and do some shopping.  Also, we enjoy the pool here at the hotel and wireless internet from a nearby restaurant. Simply park the car in front, open up the laptop and we are connected to the rest of the world.

Furthermore, we had sushi for dinner, did our laundry (in the bathtub, the laundry service is very expensive here!), went to the pharmacist, tanked petrol (yes, high-octane 95 !) and also bought some nice silver sneakers for Minke, as she had wore down her hiking boots during the trekking in Nurata Mountains. We don’t know if these shoes are really good for hiking, but who cares, they sure look hip enough for Tashkent!
