Hereby the next article of Akzo Nobel’s ‘News & Views’ on our Silk Road trip:

They’ve traveled more than 23,000 kilometers, driven at a height of 4,000 meters and taken in excess of 25,000 photographs (around a tenth of which they’ve saved) – and now they’ve finally reached China.

But the adventure is far from over for Car Refinishes employee André Koster and girlfriend Minke. Because although their epic road trip from the Netherlands along the famous Silk Road route has reached its destination, the journey is far from over.

They’ve now left their faithful Toyota Landcruiser behind in Kyrgystan and plan to use public transport to explore China for a few weeks before returning to their vehicle. They will then drive back to Kazakhstan before flying home to the Netherlands (two friends will be driving the car back to Europe).

“Having to leave our beloved Landcruiser behind was difficult but we’re not allowed to bring our own car into China,” André explained, adding that the last few weeks have been incredible.

“We’ve been horse riding in the Kyrgyzstan mountains close to the Chinese border, driven to a remote goldmine, spent a night in a yurt with a Kyrgyz family and eaten soup made of goat’s head and intestines.”

Describing Kyrgyzstan as “remote but very beautiful” other recent highlights have included driving at a record high of 4,000 meters surrounded by mountains and glaciers and driving over the Torugart Pass, widely regarded as being one of the most difficult border crossings into China.

After a series of lengthy delays at the border, they finally made it to Kashgar, one of the most famous Silk Road cities in western China.
